Cat Comments: DIY Cat Tree

I love Pinterest there are so many ideas and crafts that anyone can take on as a project. I can understand how cat scratching posts can get expensive, but I came across an inexpensive way to make your own!

All you need is an old wooden stool (you can get this at thrift shop) and sisal rope.

Around the legs of the stool wrap the sisal rope that creates a layer on the stool legs. You can even go across to make a little net (as seen pictured above) so your kitten can sit and scratch!

Cat Comments: The Best Age to Adopt Cats

For myself and personal experience, adopting an animal is 50% of searching and the other 50% is finding the age that is right for you and your lifestyle.

Cats are no different than dogs when it comes to life stages. The three categories are young, middle -aged and seniors.

Young kittens:

  • You have a fresh start in training, traits and personality when adopting a kitten but training can take a while for your kitten to get it; so have patience.

Middle – aged Cats:

  • The shelter should have a grasp of the cat’s personality and what he/she doesnt like or like with other animals and people.
  • Middle aged is a great medium they are still really active and mellowed out.

Senior Cats:

  • Adopting a senior cat is a honorable act of kindness for that feline and the shelter. Some shelters have had these cats for a long periods of time because adopters are drawn away from their age.
  • They do not have the behavioral issues and more companionable at this life stage.
  • There are some health issues that can come along with an elder cat. But with the right attention and regular vet checks it will be no problem to welcome this furry friend into your home.

Tips For Dealing With Shedding: The Never Ending Problem

I love my dogs but I hate dealing with pet hair. It seems that my floor, furniture and clothes all are a pet hair magnet and I have no clue what to do. Recently, I have been searching for home remedies and changes that I can do to improve my dog’s shedding issue. This can help cat owners too with their feline friend.

What I found was:

  • Diet is a huge factor: High quality ingredients and supplements in dog foods improve the health of your dog’s coat and skin.
  • Vitamin Supplements: provides the extra push to get all the nourishments that your furry friend needs to reduce shedding.
  • Allergies: Many pet owners don’t realize that their pets can get allergies which can contribute to their shedding and hair loss.

  • Cover and slips for furniture: This won’t solve the problem and changing these covers out will help you keep some sanity.
  • Vacuum and sweeping: cleaning on a bi weekly bias will help control the amount of hair in the home.
  • Change in pet food: Try out a couple of brands that work best for your pet and see if the amount of hair loss is changed over time.
  •  Boost pet hair health with omega oil: these oils can boost the shine and gloss of your pet’s coat and decrease shedding
  • Make an appointment to your vet: This problem might be a cause that needs medical attention and your vet can help locate the issue with tests or request some changes.
  • Grooming: Baths and brushing are important to remove the hair that lays on and within the coat and provide a cleaner coat for your pet.

I will be testing these solutions out on my dog and may be adding another post to share my findings.

Where to groom/bathe your dog locally

Grooming is very important to a dog’s health. A cleaner pet is a happy pet. Bathing your dog yourself is a money saver but a pain. Your back ends up hurting by bending over to scrub your pet. By the end of washing and drying you are more soaked in dirty dog water.

Here are some local spots to try out!

Cat Comments: Declawing isn’t a quick fix

The other browsing through some animal shelters websites, I noticed that their cats were declawed. I don’t know that much about cats or declawing but researching all the facts is quite disturbing. Some cat owners declaw their cats as a fast solution to the feline’s scratching habits. It does more harm than good for the cat by:

  1. Cats won’t be able to defend themselves or find a proper getaway like a tree if they don’t have their claws: What is a dog or wild animal is chasing them and they can’t protect themselves?
  2. Cats tend to not use their litter boxes properly after they have been declawed. Cats claw their area to marker their territory.
  3. It doesn’t extend their life span.
  4. It affects how they walk. Cats have to relearn how to walk without their claws and adapt to a more possible uncomfortable gait. This can cause joint and
    arthritis later down the road.

What is an Animal Rescue?

There are many similarities between humane soceities, city animal shelters and animal rescues but they have many differences. Here is a definition post of what is an animal rescue and what they do. One thing that stands out and makes animal rescues different from other organization is that they only focus on a certain breed like Boxers, PitBulls or Golden Retrievers. It’s where a organization can educate the community and put all their support into helping that specific breed. Any breed or species of animal you can imagine there is a rescue for them. I would advise you if you are looking for a certain breed or species of animal like dogs, cats and even horses to adopt; check out those rescues.

Here is a list of rescues in the Central Texas area:

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today is Feburary 14th, it’s a day that it is a hit or miss with some people. Happy in love with your significant other or despising all the happy couples that are surrounding you and or the amount of flower deliveries that are stopping by at your work. You can be neither; you can be happy that your cat or dog is treating you like it’s any other day: waiting to greet you at the door or lay around watching tv.

That’s the deal with pets. They will love you no matter what happens or what holiday it is. That’s the beauty of being a pet parent and owning a furbaby. Take a chance to give your pet a kiss or a long hug on this day.

Here’s a article that might interest you about dogs and love.

I will leave you with this quote by Josh Billings:

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
